ModernFormations Gallery will once again degenerate into a rogue’s gallery of jarring sounds and unpopular attitudes—for one night only—later this month.
With drummer/vocalist Jeff Gretz back from a solid year and a half of touring and recording activity with local metalcore pioneers Zao, Pittsburgh guitar/drums/chaos duo Conelrad plans a reinvigorated return in celebration of the release of their new seven-inch vinyl EP, Sluts & Slobs (on Pittsburgh’s Oh No Vertigo! records). Likewise, guitarist/vocalist Adam MacGregor steps back into the fray from his recently taken up bass and guitar duties with Brown Angel and (((microwaves))).
The show will be held at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 25, at ModernFormations gallery, located at 4919 Penn Ave., in Garfield (www.moderformations.com).
Ben Opie, Baby Bird, and Lean Seasoned Beef round out the evening’s bill, and a set by DJ Amitabh Malhotra (spinning Bollywood, bhangra, and Japanese harsh noise) will continue between acts throughout.
Alto saxophonist Opie, who will perform a solo set, has been a longtime inspiration. As far back as their days in Greensburg’s Crank Radio, Gretz and MacGregor were rabid fans of Opie’s work with the jazz/improv/proper fusion group Water Shed 5tet and their adventurous approach to composition and improvisation. Baby Bird presents noise-sopped post punk from members of Build Your Weapons and Modey Lemon, fronted by newcomer Alicia Ledden and her melodic caterwaul (www.myspace.com/supbabybird). Greensburg natives Lean Seasoned Beef (www.leanseasonedbeef.com) should need no introduction, as the interstate trucking-obsessed friendly foils for Gretz and MacGregor since at least 1995. The band, now based in Brooklyn, brings equal parts discordant stoner swagger and Mentors belch that will appeal in at least some way to fans of Stinking Lizaveta, ZZ Top, the Jesus Lizard and Don Caballero.
“This might be the last dance for some time, but we are as committed in our attempts to play one note after another in proper sequence as we were the day we started back in 2001,” says MacGregor. “I hope that those curious first-timers—as well as anyone who may have ever found what we’ve done to be amusing, provocative, or even inspiring—can stop on out to share this experience with us.”
