One of the hippest places in Pittsburgh to check out performance art in various forms and genres is the Shadow Lounge.
Jazz, hip-hop, soul, indie rock, spoken word, and poetry events are featured 7 nights a week. Whether it's the groove jazz of the Jazz Satellite or Gene Stovall's brand of acoustic soul, the performances are a great time and usually full of surprises. Plus with artists coming from places like D.C., Cleveland, and as far away as Chicago, you might just be witnessing a performance of the next big rock or hip-hop act.
And if you've ever thrown or been to a house party with some talented friends performing in the living room, then making yourself at home at the Shadow Lounge will be easy to do. The candle lit, laid back, artsy ambiance of this performance lounge and gallery is like a good friend's cozy apartment with art adorned walls, board games (monopoly anyone?), engaging books, magazines, and comfortable couches and chairs that absorb you and influence you to stay awhile.
If the front room is a hearth, the almost hidden back room has the cooling effect of an underwater scene. Named "The Blue Room", patrons and musicians can take a break with a drink at the small bar or recline on one of the many plush (and blue) sofas and ottomans. And while the lighting here is consistent with the front room -with each of its candles giving a light and
shadow of its own- the space is decidedly different.
The Blue Room acts as a venue for cinema, private
parties, and delicious edible spreads. It is also a reception room for musicians who want to unwind between sets, or for one of the Lounge's "Sipping Parties" that provide some homemade cocktails and appetizers.
So if you're looking for a place to get away from smoke-filled places or maybe a change of atmosphere to get some work done, meet a friend, or just chill, the Shadow Lounge is definitely a spot to check out.
