Mullaneys Harp and Fiddle is the site for a Pittsburgh Singles Volunteer Network (PSVN) happy hour and guest bartender night on Wednesday, December 10th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and you are invited!

The PSVN staff and board of directors will be on hand to work as guest bartenders, pouring and serving your favorite liquid libation. All of the tips collected this evening will be donated to PSVN, so give early, give often, and give generously! Harp and Fiddle and PSVN will also be offering free light munchies and snacks for all PSVN members and their friends, along with special drink specials!

In addition, PSVN will also be featuring a bulls-eye raffle (you will have to come to the event to see what this is all about!) as well as selling tickets for a drawing to win a Road Flair purse specially created just for PSVN from our friends at Littlearth.

This event is a great way to meet fellow singles, help PSVN with its fundraising efforts, and make a few new friends along the way! We will also have a table set up so singles can join PSVN right on the spot - so be sure to bring a friend that would like to find out more about PSVN. No reservations or RSVPs necessary - just show up that evening! Hope to see you there!

Irma Freeman: A celebration of her life and art on the 100th anniversary of her birth

Friday, December 12th, 2003, 7-10 PM
The Garfield Artworks, 4913 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA
412-802-7096
featuring live music by members of ATS, the Ferral Family, the Cuff and Alexei & the Justins

Irma Freeman (1903 - 1994)

Irma Freeman was an inspired and prolific artist who painted for over half a century, creating an enormous body of artwork right here in the heart of Pittsburgh. She produced over 500 canvases, numerous pieces of hand-painted furniture, thousands of drawings and greeting cards, and wrote and illustrated 3 small books. Her imagination and creativity allowed her to transcend the struggles of poverty and, later, the difficulties of aging and the sorrows of losing her loved ones. In her later years Irma often said that it was her painting that gave her the will to live.

Irma painted extraordinary still lives, landscapes and portraits, often in bold, vivid colors. Some of them are reinventions of her humble surroundings and spirited images of herself, her family and her friends. Others are of memories of her youth in Germany, of her fantasies, and of her dreams. Certain running motifs (her cat, a round table, a ceramic pitcher, a mortar and pestle) impart a sense of familiarity and hominess to many of her works. Like Chagall, Irma often explored the nebulous place between two and three-dimensions. Like Matisse and Bonnard, the backgrounds of her paintings are as evocative as the subjects.

Irma was a largely self-taught artist whose youthful spirit of adventure remained with her until her death at the age of 90. Over the decades, and notably into her eighties, her work shows the influence of the study of her favorite painters and evolves from a more formal to a freer, more expressive style,

Irma's works, and her life, were filled with the light of love. Her wonderful talents and charming personality moved the hearts of all who knew her. Irma still has much to teach us: about living and loving, about overcoming suffering and loss, and about finding freedom within ourselves.
The Event: Come celebrate a birthday retrospective!

To commemorate what would have been her 100th birthday, this exhibit will present a selection of 100 paintings by Irma Freeman, most of which have never been seen by the public. This is a special one-night event featuring live music by members of ATS, the Ferral Family, the Cuff and Alexei & the Justins, films, and slides about Irma's life and work by her family and friends. There will also be a digital slide show of more than 400 of her works. In the spirit of her memory, there will be an opportunity to interact with the artwork in the exhibition space through writing and art-making. A special reception will feature Irma's favorite foods: matzo ball soup, potato kugel, her savory potato salad, and more!

9. ------------------------------------------------

We recently read an article in a local weekly publication with great interest. The subject was the need for alternative rehearsal/performance spaces in Pittsburgh. The challenge here seems to be affordability, and location. We can sympathize, being a small dance organization/company who have self-produced with very little funding since 1999.Theatres, regardless of size, are often cost prohibitive. Small arts organizations need time to gradually increase their audience base. In 2002 we began presenting our dance/theatre productions in our homebase/rehearsal space-Helios Arts in Shadyside. The space is large, adaptable, and affordable. Besides, being home to Ampersand Dance Theatre, Helios Arts is also home to Centro Flamenco de Pittsburgh, Nego Gato Inc, John Colombo Photography, and many solo artists and fitness groups throughout the community. Our last two dance concerts were held with great success and attendance. In fact, if we could have predicted such a large turnout for Indiechor 2002, we could've added a second performance. We find that people these days are interested in more intimate spaces that are used creatively. Part of the solution to finding affordable rehearsal/performance spaces is for small arts groups to open the lines of communication and work together. We believe that anyone interested in taking a look at our space will find it very adaptable to a variety of dance and theatrical rehearsals and performances.
